One-on-One Lessons

Lessons are available virtually and in-person and designed to address the specific needs and questions of each student. You will learn to ask yourself questions to find more connections and postural awareness. Learn to shift your thinking from your body’s limitations to the possibility and potential of anything you can imagine.

We will work to simultaneously increase mindfulness and awareness of your body while you are doing any activity: sitting at a computer, cutting hair at the salon, or playing with a band.

What does a typical lesson look like?

Lessons are 60 minutes in length.

The lesson begins with a check-in about what has been happening in the mind/body with the student sitting in a chair. We talk about what brought you to the Alexander Technique, what has changed recently, and what you noticed in your body in the past week.

The student can choose an activity or an activity will be suggested by the teacher. We will slow down to allow more time to become aware of how you initiate, embody, and/or complete the action. You may notice extra tension in parts, passivity in other places, or become aware of an unconscious understanding of how the body evolved to move. Using the new understanding, the student advances to another activity to apply what was learned.

The lesson typically ends with the student lying face-up on a massage table, and the teacher invites the student to release into connection. After gently inviting the student to allow a little more length, width, and depth in their whole body and doing a little less holding, the teacher invited the student to check in with how they feel. After the table work, the lesson ends with a summary of what was covered, addresses any additional questions, and formulates a plan (or homework) to continue cultivating more awareness of how we move, think, or feel.

50 Minutes (In-Person or Zoom)

New to meditation or mindfulness and looking to explore how to start your practice? The Basics of Mindfulness Practice class may be for you! This class is held once per month for individuals new to meditation and those interested in reconnecting with their mindfulness meditation practice.

In this class, you will learn some basic mindfulness skills, such as finding the best posture and sitting position for you, what equipment to use (and what you likely already have around the house), as well as the different types of meditation that might be best for what you need.

You will then participate in several teacher-led mindfulness meditations, and there will be space to ask questions, give feedback, or raise issues for group discussion.

Note: Please call or send an email to info@sevadsm.com to make a reservation for this class. Class size is limited to ten for those meeting in-person. Meditation cushions or chairs are provided for those meeting in person.

RSVP and masks are required.

“With Jay's teaching, and patience, I was able to bring awareness to my breath, and the tension in my body, which allowed for the idea that change is possible.”

Small Groups, Workshops, and Classes

Classes provide general information about the body and how it moves efficiently. Each workshop is unique to the individual group and their interests.

Everyone in the group will have an experience of the Alexander Technique principles. A few individuals may receive a mini-lesson with direct contact with verbal feedback.
